Referring Veterinarians

At Sunshine Coast Equine Hospital, we value the relationships we have with referring veterinarians and see each case as an opportunity to support both you and your client through access to hospital-based care and specialist input.

Our role is to complement the care you are already providing, offering additional resources for cases requiring further investigation, treatment, or monitoring, while ensuring a seamless experience from admission through to discharge.

Our Approach

Our hospital is built on a team-based model, with veterinarians working across medicine, surgery, and critical care to provide coordinated, high-quality care. We prioritise clear, practical communication throughout the process.

When to Refer

We welcome cases requiring:

  • Medical workups and further investigation

    • Hospitalisation and ongoing monitoring

    • Surgical procedures and perioperative care

    • Intensive or critical care support

If you are unsure whether referral is appropriate, we encourage you to call to discuss cases with our team.

Communication

We aim to keep communication straightforward and consistent. This includes:

  • • Discussion prior to admission where possible

    • Updates during hospitalisation

    • Consultation around significant findings or changes in management

    • Discharge back to your care for ongoing treatment

Telemedicine Consults

For veterinarians managing cases in remote locations, or where referral is not immediately practical, telemedicine consults can be arranged where appropriate. This includes case discussion, review of diagnostics, and input into management plans to support you in the field.

Teleconsults are most useful when sufficient clinical information, imaging, and pathology results are available to guide recommendations.
